Citizen of the World
Now in its 18th year, the annual IAC Citizen of the World Gala Award Dinner honors a great North Carolinian who has taken a leading role in fostering the state's internationalization. We invite you to join us Friday evening, November 2, 2012, at the elegant Umstead Hotel and Spa (Cary, NC) for a delightful and important celebration.
The IAC's 2012 Citizen of the World honoree is Mr. Rye Barcott, co-founder of Carolina for Kibera (CFK). In his bestselling memoir, It Happened on the Way to War , Barcott describes his efforts while a U.S. Marine to co-found CFK, an organization that develops citizen leadership in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya. Empowed by CFK, local leaders now run major health, educational, and youth programs that are transforming the lives of Kibera residents.
Rye holds degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill, the Kennedy School, and Harvard Business School, and is a TED Fellow. He serves now as special adviser to Jim Rogers, Chairman, President, and CEO of Duke Energy Corporation.
IAC Citizen of the World honorees from previous years include Gov. Jim Hunt, Ambassador Jeanette Hyde, Dr. John Hope Franklin, and Dr. Jim Goodnight, to name just a few.
